Stuttgart, 15. 4. 1993 Phylogenetische Untersuchungen larvalmorphologischer Merkmale der Carabidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) Phylogenetic Investigations of Morphological Characters in Larval Carabidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) Von Erik Arndt, Leipzig f äUG 5 19»1 Mit 26 Abbildungen und 3 Tabellen Summary 1 .) Larval characters of representatives of 39 tribes of Carabidae have been analyzed phylo-genetically. In addition, characters of larvae of the adephagan families Rhysodidae, Gyrinidae, Haliplidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae, Amphizoidae, Hygrobiidae, of Micromalthidae (Archoste-mata) and of 6 polyphagan families are taken into consideration. 2.) The phylogeny of the suborder Adephaga and of the family Carabidae is discussed. The results of this study suggest that the Adephaga form a monophyletic unit. The Carabidae (ex-cluding Rhysodidae) + Dytiscoidea (Dytiscidae, Noteridae, Amphizoidae, and Hygrobiidae) form a monophyletic unit which is characterized by the presence of egg-bursters in the first larval instar (chapter 7.). 3.) The Trachypachidae are probably the sister-group of the Dytiscoidea (7.4.). 4.) The Carabidae (excluding Rhysodidae) are monophyletic (7.4.). 5.) A sister-group relationship between the Cicindelitae and the Loriceritae is suggested by several common derived larval features (5.1.). 6.) The Metriitae and Paussitae form a monophyletic unit, which has seperated very early from the rest of the Carabidae (5.3.). 7.) The Brachinitae are an old group and are possibly closer related to the Metriitae and Paussitae (5.3.3.). 8.) The Psydrinae (sensu Erwin) are polyphyletic. The systematic placement of Psydrini remains unclear (5.4.2.). 9.) Patrobitae + Trechitae are monophyletic. The Trechini + Tachyina are monophyletic (5.4.2.3.). 10.) One larval synapomorphy Supports the monophyly of the extensive subfamily Harpa-hnae if the Cnemacanthini are included (5.4.3.). The larval characters found in Platynini may come close to the groundplan of the Harpalinae. 11.) A monophyletic unit which comprises all members of the Pterostichini, Morionini, Callistini, Oodini, Licinini, Panagaeini, Peleciini, Harpalini, Cnemacanthini and Zabrini is
