The island of Herra is situated about 3 miles from the east coast of Guernsey, from which it is separated by a narrow channel, the Little Russel, in which the sea presents exceed-ingly violent currents. The island of Herm is not much more than half a mile broad and nearly 2 miles in length. The coast, which is nearly perpendicular to the east and especially towards the south, falls with a gentle slope to the north and west. On the west coast the sea in retiring lays bare an immense sandy beach, which extends at spring-tides to a distance of more than half a mile. Thus the surface of the
