ON EAST Al'^RICAN LIZARDS. 131 11. Notes on East African Lizards collected 1015-1919, with Description of a new Genus and Species of Skink and new Subspecies of Gecko. By Arthur LOVERIDGE. [Received March 5, 1920 : Read March 30, 1920.] (Text-figure 1.) The following notes are based on a collection of 900 lizards and chameleons collected by the writer during the campaign in East Africa. Over a thousand specimens were collected, but one box containing lizards from Kerogwe, Handeni, etc., and handed to the S. & T. for transmission to the base, never reached its des-tination. Another box containing half-a-dozen jars of lizards and chamasleons was lost «?^ route for England. Besides these there are a good many specimens in the Nairobi Museum collected by the writer which were not brought home, and therefore were not available for study for the present paper. Representatives of all the families of East African lizards were taken, more than half the genera and about one-third of the recorded species. The numbers are distributed as follows : — Number of Family. Genera, Species. specimens. Geckonidse ,. 5 12 255 Agamidae , 1 5 55 Zonuridse 1 1 12 Varanidas 1 2 13 Amphisbfenidee 117 Laeertidje 5 6 69 Gerrhosauridfe 1 2 46 Scincidpe 5 12 -330 AnelytrojDidfe 1 I 1 Chamfeleontidje 2 9 112 Total... 900 The most representative collection was made in Ex-German East Afiica, where the writer spent two and a half years. Six months were spent in Portuguese East and one and a half years in British East Africa. The field-notes are not so extensive as would have been the case had conditions not been so adverse. For nearly twelve months all specimens had to be carried on the i^addie until camp was made, and an opportunity arose to send tJtem back to the base on the returning supply lorries. The principal localities mentioned in the following pao^es are : — British East Africa : West Mt. Ivenia, Mt. Siswa, Mt. Margaret, Kedong Valley, Thika, Nairobi, Kabete, Kagiado, Bissel,"^ Yoi, Mbunj'i, Mombasa. 9*
