[Read 18th June, 1914.] The present paper is not designed to be a complete monograph of the Australian yEschnince, on the lines of E. M. "Walker's excellent work on the genus u^sclma in North America *. To deal with the whole subfamily in Australia on such lines would not only have involved the production of a paper far beyond the bounds of the present one in cost and size, but would have unnecessarily duplicated much good work already accomplished. Most of the Australian species have been already well described by Rene Martin f, while a few have been added by Forster and myself. But so far nothing-has been published on their life-histories, nor has any attempt been made to survey their geographical distribution and their phylogeny (except in so far as the Australian forms have entered into the gene7'al discussion of these problems for the whole subfamily).
