Volume 18, Number 3 2008 Trejo-Torres Reynosia vivesiana (Rhamnaceae) from Puerto Rico branches with dark green leaves are conspicuous in the short vegetation canopy. Flowers have been recorded froIm June through October and Decembner, and fruits in January, June, July, and October. Flowers have been observed replete with nectar. Etymology. The specific epithet of Reynosia viveiana honors Miguel "Papo" Vives from Quebra- dillas, Puerto Rico. Vives, formerly a chemistry teacher, is now widely known as an expert on plant identification in the island. In the past 30 years, the has been co/mpanion and collaborator with botanists responsible for the modern Flora of Puerto Rico. lHe devotes his time to the study of thle plants of the island, and he has been an inspiration flor ilnewomers studying the natural world of Puerto Rico. Conmmon ICnames. The co/mmnon lnamie '"cascarroya," also used for other Rhamnaceae in Puerto Rico, is recorded on the oldest specimen of Re ynosia vi esia.na (GAG 30. UPR). Another common name registered on the specimens L. Gregory 263, 308 (UPR) is "guama," which is evidently the source for the specific epithet of the putative species R. guanma. 1 do not know if the application of the comnon name "guanma" to the plants from Puerto Rico comes from a local informant (i.e., a genuine vernacular name), or if it is a translocation of the nalme from the Virgin Islands plants.
