Polentilleae, Rosaceae, Stellalriopsis. New sections, combinations, and varieties, pre-sented below, are necessary for a treatment of variousgenera of Rosaceae Jussieu tribe Potentilleae Sweet ina forthcoming volume of Florna of North Americta Northof/ Mexico (FNA). In our treatment, both HorkeliaChamisso & Schletchendal andl Iresia Torrey & A.Gray are considered to be dislinct from Potentilla I,.following Keck (1938) with some modificationsrecently adopted by Ertter (1993) and Holmgren(1997), even though this results in a paraphyleticPolentilla in a strict sense. In the previous compre-hensive treatments of Potentilleae in North America,Rydberg (1898) initially maintained Ivesia in Horkeliaonly to later accept both genera as distinct (Rydberg,1908). He also recognized some entities (ComoarellaRydberg and Stellariopsis Rydberg) at the genericlevel that Keck subsequently submerged into Iesi'sa.Some of the numerous unranked names proposed byRydberg above the rank of species have been formallyestablished at the rank of secttion by subsequentauthors (e.g., Johnston, 1985); several more arelikewise established herein. Keys and full descriptions will be available in theFlora and are not repeated here (except for a key tothe varieties of Ihesia gordonii (looker) Torrey & A.Gray). The distribution statements given here in somedetail are based on our review of taxa for the FNAtreatment and, in some cases, as noted, are novel.NovoN 17: 315-325.
