ITINERARY OF EDOUARD FRANOIS ANDR m HIS EXPEDITION TO THE NORTHEmR ANDES 1875-76 L.yan B. Smith The present accouat was inspired by the work of T. A. Spragueand N. Y. Sandwith on the itineraries of Humboldt and Bonplandand it is hoped that it will find the same use. It has laid inmy files awaiting final polish more years than I like to think,so I ar bringing it out now before somebody else bas to salvageit for me. Edouard Franois Andr was coiisaioned by the French govern-aent to make a general scientific survey in the region of thenorthern Andes and although the main emphasis was on botany, other fields were not neglected. Since Andr was not reimbursedfor the expenses of the expedition, he was forced to recoup byselling his specimens to the Royal Botanic Gardena, Kew, wherethey may now be consulted. He vas a horticulturist as ell as ascientist and bis collections are particularly rich in ornamen-tals such as orchids, broliads, aroids, begonias, and palas. This itinerary has been prepared by searching out Andr4'scollections in the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University, wherethere i a good set, and by noting every locality mentioned inhis serial account in "Le Tour du Monde".
