A NEW SPECIES OF FUNIFERA (THYME LAEACEAE) Lorin I. Nevling, Jr. Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois At the time of my preliminary report on the genus Funifera (Jour. Arnold Arb. 46: 232-241. 1965) three species were recog-nized: F. brasitiensis (Raddi) Mansfeld; F. evioiflora (Gilg ^ Markgraf) Domke; F. grandifolia Domke. A fourth species was in-cluded in the key to species, was described as fully as possible, but was not named. It was assumed that additional material of the latter species would accumulate shortly and that it would be described fully at that time. A decade has passed and no new collections have been seen although an examination of a suite of specimens collected by Pereira (681) at the Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro revealed the presence of both staminate and pis-tillate plants. Further delay in formally describing this new species does not seem warranted. KEY TO THE SPECIES Mature leaves 4 to 7 times longer than broad, narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, 4-14 cm. long, 1-3 cm. broad, densely sericeous beneath. Leaves alternate or opposite, the apex long acuminate; staminate inflorescences 10-35-f lowered, the primary pedun-cle 10-35 mm. long, slender; disc of the staminate flowers coronate, the lobes connate below; pistillate flowers with 4 staminodia F. insulae. Leaves irregularly pseudo-whorled, opposite, subopposite or rarely alternate, the apex acute and often minutely apicu-late; staminate inflorescences 5-6-flowered, the primary peduncle ca. 3 mm. long, stout; disc of the staminate flow-ers with 8 free lobes; pistillate flowers with 8 staminodia. F. brasitiensis. Mature leaves about 3 times longer than broad, elliptic to oblan-ceolate or obovate, sparsely sericeous beneath. Leaves elliptic, 8-12 cm. long, 2.5-4 cm. broad, glabrous above, the apex subacute (nearly blunt); disc of the stam-inate flowers with 8 free lobes; pistillate flowers lacking staminodia F. eriaiflora. Leaves oblanceolate to obovate, 9-21 cm. long, 3-7 cm. broad, glabrescent above, the apex acute or abruptly acumin-ate; disc of the staminate flowers coronate, the lobes con-nate below; pistillate flowers with 8 staminodia.
