A REVISION OF THE GENUS ARCHIBAGCHARIS HEERING. (COMPOSITAE -ASTEREAE) John D. Jackson Department of Botany, University of Minnesota, St. Paul Abstract Twenty-eight taxa of Arc hi bac char is are treated, these recog-nized as twenty-two species with nine varieties. The range of the genus is from northern Mexico to central Pajiajna. Extensions of the known ranges are reported for maJiy of the tajca. The genus is recircumscribed and divided into two sections. An older name whose validity was previously unrecognized is now cited for the type species of Archibaccharis . Two taxa are accorded new status and one variety is placed in synonymy. One new combination is reported. One species asid one variety are described as new. One name wa^ removed from the genus. Pistillate or staminate specimens of six taxa are described for the first time. One species is reported as prob-ably being monoecious. Chromosome data is provided for sixteen taxa. New evidence of evolutionary significance is reported. Tajconomic literature, vernaicular names, geographicaJL distri-bution, morphology, generic -intergeneric relationships, evolu-tion, cytological ajid pollen data are discussed. New keys, distribution maps and ecological data as well as floral ajid chromosome illustrations are included.
