JO RNAL OF THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM THE GENUS ILEX IN CHINA, IV SHiri-v IN Hu (Continued jrom page SO) SECTIoN VIII. LAUROILEX. SECT. NOV. Arbor sempervirens: ramulis glalris; foliis crasse coriaceis, integerrimis;inflorescentiis fasciculatis vel pseudo-paniculatis, compositis ex tricho-tomis cymosis vel umbellatis; floribus 5 7-meris; fructibus parvis, globosis,ca. 4 mm. diametro; pyrenis laevibus, 5-7, minutis, 2 mm. longis, dorso3-striatis, esulcatis: endocarpio coriacco. In having entire leaves, 5-7-merous flowers and small smooth coriaceouspyrenes, this section shows a close relationship with ser. Longecaudatae. It is distinguished from the latter by its larger leaves and cymose orumbelliform rather than unillorous individual branches in pistillate fas-cicles. I do not agree with Loesener, who placed Ilrx rvcnlosa Hook. f.in the subgenus Byronia, as it lacks the characters of that group. Byroniais essentially characterized by numerous (10 18) pyrenes, while the twospecies I place in the new section Lauroilex have but 5-S pyrenes. Two species occur in China. Their distribution is as shown in figure 0. KEY TO i' I; SI'IFCIIS .\.
