JOURNAL OF THEARNOLD ARBORETUMVOL. 59OCTOBER 1978NUMBER 4 GENERIC LIMITS IN THE TRIBE CLADOTHAMNEAE (ERICACEAE). AND ITS POSITION IN THE RHODODENDROIDEAE BRUCE A. BOHM, SCOTT W. BRIM, RICHARD J. HEBDA, AND P. F. STEVENS THE CLADOTHAMNEAE COMPRISE a group of four species, all ornamentalshrubs, in the Ericaceae subfamily Rhododendroideae. Although they areall fairly well known, being in cultivation, the four species have been givenfour generic names. There is no consistency in the usage of these names,as the arrangements listed below indicate.racemosa paniculataElliottia Elliottiabracteata pyroliflorusElliottia Cladothamnus REFERENCEHooker. 1876;Copeland, 1943Elliottia Elliottia Botryostege Cladothamnus Stapf, 1934Elliottia Tripetaleia TripetaleiaCladothamnnusElliottia Tripetaleia Tripetaleia TripetaleiaDrude. 1897:Cox, 1948Stevens, 1971(combinationof C. pyroliflorus inTripetaleia, notpublished)In the following discussion, Copeland's nomenclature will be followed. This paper is an attempt to resolve the generic limits in the group byusing evidence from anatomy, chemistry, morphology, and palynology,'and combining this information with what is already known about floralanatomy. The evidence presented here suggests that there is only a single 1 The sections of morphology and anatomy are by Brim and Stevens; the formerexamined the group during the course of his work for a Senior Thesis at HarvardUniversity. Bohm has a long-standing interest in the flavonoids of the group, whilethe pollen was examined by Hebda in conjunction with the work of the other authors. The introduction and general discussion, written by Stevens, are acceptable to all. @ President and Fellows of Harvard College, 1978.SPECIESEPITHET U. z ui t--Id
