In pursuance of a statement made by myself at the Norwich meeting of the British Association concerning the non-deriva-tive character of the fossils of the Red Crag (except in such palpable instances as those of Eocene shells, &c. : see Report of Sections), I have now by me a list of nearly fifty species of bivalves which I have seen with the valves united, from this deposit, including Solen ensis, Panopea Faujasii, Mactra glauca, and many species which are held together by very slight ligamental fastenings.
