Part II: Palpicornia -Hydrophiloidea (Hydraenidae, Hydrochidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae) and Diversicornia (Dryopidae, Elminthidae, Helodidae) (In-secta, Coleoptera) Water beetles werestudied in the northern part of theEifeland itsnorthernpeneplain. Sixty-two of the 142 species found belong to the families of Hydraenidae, Hydrochidae, Helophoridae, Hy-drophilidae (all Palpicornia -Hydrophiloidea), Dryopidae, Elminthidae and Helodidae (Diversi-cornia). The surprising number of species in flowing waters and their adjacent stagnant zone was confirmed by other investigations. The species of the families cited above are rare in waters with ex-treme conditions such as in the area of the fens and those polluted with heavy metals at the Breiniger Berg. The following species are new records for this area: Helophorus longitarsus Woll., Helopho-rusgriseus Hbst., Helochares ohscurm Müll. 3indx.h.t semiterrtstr'iz\ Helophorus porculus Bed. Very rare in the Eifel and the Rheinprovinz are Anacaena bipustulata Marsh., Laccobius biguttatus Gerh., Crenitispunctatostriata Letzn. (only in bogs), Enochrus coarctatus Gredl., Hydrochus bre-vis Hbst., Hydraena dentipes Germ., Elmis aenea Müll, and the semiterrestrial species Crypto-pleurum subtile Sharp., Cercyon lugubris Ol. and Cercyon marinus Thoms. These species had been reported only rarely from this area, but they were found frequently during this study. Einleitung Im Gegensatz zu den adephagen Wasserkäfern ist die Faunistik und Ökologie der was-serbewohnenden Palpicorna und Diversicornia nur ungenügend bekannt. Darum er-scheint es dringlich, Verbreitungsdaten und ökologische Daten dieser Familien zusam-menzutragen. Auch führten in der Vergangenheit Bestimmungsfehler zu Bewertungskri-terien, die ein falsches Bild bestimmter Arten entstehen ließen.
