Abstract
Remarks on the taxonomy of 1 9 genera of Phygadeuontini are compiled. The subtribes Cephalobaridina TOWNES
and Gnypetomorphina TowNES are synonymized with the Phygadeuontina FÖRSTER and Hemitehna FÖRSTER, re-
spectively. Odontoneura FÖRSTER (s. 1.) is subdivided into the genera Distathma TowNES (syn. Hemicallidiotes
Blanchard nom. nud., syn. n. Afghaniteles Aubert), Fianoniella gen. n. (for Fianonia sensu TowNES nee Seyrig,
type species Fianonia piliventris TöWNES) and Odontoneura (s. Str.), and Zoophthorus FÖRSTER (s. 1.) is subdivided
into Indovia Seyrig and Zoophthorus (s. str.), the latter being further subdivided into species groups. Diagnostic
characters for these genera and for Isadelphus FÖRSTER and Mastrus FÖRSTER, and hsts of the Holarctic species are
given. The type species of Bathymetis FÖRSTER and Platycryptus Kriechbaumer are interpreted. Keys are provided
for the Western Palaearctic species of Cremnodes FÖRSTER and Sulcarius TöWNES, and the greater part of the Eu-
ropean species of Dichrogaster DouMERC, Ethelurgus FÖRSTER, Gnypetomorpha FÖRSTER and Pygocryptus Roman
are characterized.
The following new species are described: Cremnodes costalis, Orthizema nigriventre, Sulcarius laevipleuris, S. ni-
gridens and 5. suecicus. Dichrogaster crassicornis HöRSTMANN and D. mandibularis HöRSTMANN are removed from
synonymy with D. heteropus (Thomson) and D. longicaudata (Thomson), respectively, and Sulcarius fontinalis
(Ruschka) is removed from synonymy with S. nigricornis (Thomson). Hemiteles maculithorax ASHMEAD is trans-
ferred to Encrateola STRAND, and Phygadeuon infernalis RuTHE is provisionally transferred to Stibeutes FÖRSTER.
The following new synonyms of species are indicated: Phygadeuon dimidiatus Thomson syn. P. cylindricus
Brischke, Cremnodes atricapillus (Gravenhorst) syn. C. nanodes FÖRSTER, Dichrogaster longicaudata (Thom-
son) syn. D. diatropus TowNES, and Lochetica westoni (Bridgman) syn. L.pimplaria (Thomson) forma rufiventris
Habermehl (the latter recognized as separate subspecies). Lectotypes are designated for Ichneumon atricapillus
Gravenhorst, Cremnodes combustus Förster, Lochetica pimplaria (Thomson) forma rufiventris Habermehl
and Ichneumon expulsor Thunberg.
Einleitung
TowNES (1970) hat die Tribus Phygadeuontini (= Gelini) in 14 Subtribus und etwa 100 Gattungen
aufgeteilt und hat damit eine Basis geschaffen, von der alle weiteren Untersuchungen ausgehen müs-
sen. Allerdings haben sich schon bald Unzulänglichkeiten dieses Systems gezeigt, die dann zutage tre-
ten, wenn man die schon beschriebenen Arten systematisch auf ihre Merkmale hin durchsieht oder
wenn bisher unbeschriebene Arten mit unerwarteten Merkmalskombinationen auftauchen (Horst-
MANN 1978; Carlson 1979; Töwnes 1983; Gauld 1984). Meines Erachtens muß diese Arbeit, die Erfas-
sung des Artenbestandes und seiner Merkmale in verschiedenen Regionen der Erde und die Verteilung
der Arten auf definierbare Gattungen, noch über längere Zeit fortgesetzt werden, bevor man mit Er-
